An unusual and unparalleled cup of coffee at % Arabica

In the heart of Budapest’s lively Jewish Quarter, finding a coffee brand rooted in Japan feels surprisingly natural. District VII is full of modern cafés and restaurants, reflecting how influences from around the world are welcomed and not only gain a foothold but also help bring about the fusion of two cultures into one city. At % Arabica, Japanese origins meet Budapest through design, carefully made coffee, and a calm atmosphere that offers the perfect break from the buzzing neighbourhood.

Spot & Setting

Walking through the streets of Budapest’s Jewish Quarter, with its trendy cafés and the energetic pulse of its famous ruin bars (which are very well attended, especially in the evening hours), is an essential part of discovering District VII.

For me, % Arabica was the perfect spot to start the day and set off exploring. I stopped by before diving into the neighborhood and visiting the beautiful Dohány Street Synagogue, though you could also just as easily make it a little luxury break along the way — or a place to recharge after wandering through the bustling streets of the Jewish Quarter. Whether you’re just setting out, taking a moment to pause, or wrapping up your time in the neighborhood, it’s a lovely spot to enjoy some Japanese-inspired coffee.

This is what i ordered

I ordered their signature Kyoto Latte. It’s a coffee drink born at % Arabica in Japan and blends espresso with steamed milk and a touch of condensed milk, setting it apart from other lattes.

Served & Sipped

After entering the bright, spacious store, I ordered their signature Kyoto Latte, which was served within minutes over the wide, open counter, topped with beautiful swan-shaped latte art that made me especially happy.

The Kyoto Latte is their specialty drink, combining rich espresso, silky steamed milk, and a delicate touch of condensed milk into one beautifully balanced cup. The Latte delivers a remarkably buttery texture with no acidity, chocolate undertones, and a flavour profile that I can only describe as “sweet and elegant”.

Velvety, textured milk and rich espresso with a subtle hint of chocolate — the Kyoto Latte was incredibly comforting. It had the perfect amount of sweetness, beautifully balanced, with an almost dessert-like quality. I couldn’t tell whether I was drinking coffee or treating myself to something sweet. Just wow!

Space & Soul

One of the first things you notice when you walk in is the bright white interior, open-bar layout, and custom-branded portafilter machine. At first glance, you might think it’s simply another modern, clean, minimalist space, but there’s much more thought behind the design. The seating elements, developed in collaboration with Hungary’s iconic Zsolnay factory, take inspiration from the cozy warmth and fluid lines of Budapest’s traditional thermal baths.

I found this particularly thoughtful, as Japanese coffee culture and Budapest’s own traditions come together here, creating a space that invites you to slow down, rest for a little while, and simply enjoy a good coffee.

% Arabica also has an espresso bean bar. They roast the beans fresh here, and you can not only enjoy a cup of coffee but also buy beans to take home.

And if you’re wondering right now because you might have heard the name before or seen the concept somewhere else, yes % Arabica is a Japanese coffee brand and it has locations in Asia, Africa, America and Europe.
it was founded by Kenneth Shoji, whose passion for coffee during his college years sparked a vision to create the best cup possible. But even though it’s a coffee chain, I didn’t get that feeling at all. I never felt like I was anywhere other than in a well-run café with a team that enjoys serving coffee — something that, in the end, really impressed me.

Summary & Scoring

Visiting % Arabica (Address: Király u. 40) may be an experience that could be replicated in other cities, but I still have to give it a strong recommendation and suggest this spot in Budapest. With only three other locations in Europe (the UK, Turkey, and France), % Arabica is definitely not that widespread and is more than worth a visit. So, when in Budapest, make sure to add it to your Café-visit list.
